Drive the engine slowly to run it in - wherever possible when it's at least 15°C outside and taking care to ensure you have the necessary time and patience. Before starting the engine for the first time, pre-warm it and make sure the clutch bites earlier than for normal race set-up. Ideally, the engine should then be driven without a break for around 10 tankfuls - initially with the idle speed set slightly higher and the main needle set to rich. After each tankful the main needle can be closed a little more. Once the engine has been run in, it is ready to be driven at racing speed, although care must be taken on the straights not to drive at full throttle for the entire length. If the piston is running smoothly through the top dead center (TDC), the engine can be driven normally at full speed. The engine temperature should not fall below 80°C at any point while it is being run in. If possible, when racing and for normal use, pre-warm the engine slightly, accelerate gradually and avoid driving at full throttle for the first couple of laps. The engine can then be driven at full speed. Care should always be taken not to run the tank dry when driving full throttle. After-race engine care To protect and care for engine components after use, pour a funnel's worth of engine oil (OA3030) into the engine through the carburettor. This helps to protect the bearing from corrosion, the O-rings in the carburettor from hardening and the piston from jamming in the sleeve. The oil is best added when the engine is warm as it can reach the critical parts of the engine better. After use, the exhaust system should be dismantled from the engine and the exhaust connector on the engine housing plugged to help protect against engine corrosion.
